Curator in Residence |  Katalin Erdődi |  press to exit project space |  19 November -17 December 2018

Upon the invitation of press to exit project space, and within the framework of the “Visiting Curatorial Initiative” program, Katalin Erdődi (1980, Debrecen, Hungary) is visiting Macedonia from November 19 to December 17, 2018. She is a curator, researcher and cultural worker active in the fields of contemporary art and performance since 2004. Her practice focuses on cross-disciplinary collaboration, politically engaged artistic and curatorial strategies, experimental performative formats, and art in public space, understood in the broadest sense as social, architectural, and discursive space. She lives and works in Vienna.

During her stay in Skopje, Katalin Erdődi will do practice-based research that is part of her doctoral studies. Her research explores the post-socialist rural condition in Hungary and in other former Socialist countries, including Macedonia, more precisely socio-economic, political and cultural transformation processes in rural places, with the political transition at the end of 80’s/beginning of 90’s seen as a turning point. She examines heterogeneous and fragmented realities of rural change—especially focusing on the transformation of agricultural work, rural livelihoods and everyday life—with the help of artistic and curatorial strategies at the intersection of public art, art-based research and socio-political engagement.

As a curator Erdődi has worked for art institutions and festivals, such as steirischerherbst’18 (Graz), brut/imagetanz festival (Vienna), GfZK – Museum of Contemporary Art (Leipzig), Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art (Budapest) and Trafó House of Contemporary Arts (Budapest), as well as self-organized platforms, such as the experimental music and performance series Der Blöde Dritte Mittwoch (Vienna). As an independent curator she has (co-)initiated and (co-)curated a diverse range of projects, among others I like being a farmer and I would like to stay one with the artist Antje Schiffers (2017-8, Budapest/Hungary), Enjoy Austria with the artist Núria Güell (2016, Vienna), Enjoy Your Struggles (2016, Budapest, co-curated with Zsuzsi Flohr), Social Honey with the artist group finger (2013, Budapest), politics of the small act (2012, Leipzig) and PLACCC Festival, an international festival for site-specific performance and art in public space (2008-2011, Budapest, co-founded and co-curated with Fanni Nánay). Alongside her curatorial work, Erdődi also collaborates as a dramaturgy advisor with Vienna-based performance artists, among others Gin Müller, Oleg Soulimenko, Sööt/Zeyringer and Doris Uhlich, and works internationally as an author and editor for art journals such as tranzitblog, Mezosfera, Színház, etcetera – Performing Arts Magazine and Bildpunkt. Since 2016 she is working on PhD-in-Practice at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, PhD-in-Curating at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and the University of Reading.

Katalin Erdődi’s visit is part of the annual program of Project Space Press Exit entitled “Undisciplined Forms of Knowledge”, supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Macedonia. This year’s partners of the Press Exit are the Museum of Contemporary Art Skopje and Kontrapunkt, Skopje.
